I just read a press release based on a popular dating sites tracking statistics here and I must say I was surprised by the findings although the reasoning I don’t know If I would quite agree with. The popular dating site which states it has over 10 million registered users says that the number of women that are online looking for a casual intimate dating encounter has doubled in percentage points over the last four years. I think that is quite a jump in the matter of just four years and speaks to the fast pace changes that are happening in today’s society.
The press release goes on to state that just three years ago the number of men looking for a casual intimate encounter online in comparison to women was 10 to 1 and is now down 5 to 1. That fact that men are online in massive numbers is no surprise I was definitely surprised that the ration went down to 5 to 1 in just a matter of 3 years. You don’t have to be a math wizard to figure out that for every man that goes online looking for a hook up there’s got to be another 5 women looking for that same thing in order for that ratio to go down so fast in the last 3 years. The data goes on to predict that the ration will be in a dead even heat of 1 to 1 with in the next decade.
This is all well and good and I normally take any “data” like this with a grain of salt. In other words I don’t really put much value in this information other than it’s a way to get some press for the dating website. The tail end of this article is what struck me as funny though. It’s main reasoning for these numbers fluctuating the way they are is the popularity of Sex in The City, yep a TV show. I have seen the show and yes I watched the DVD movie when it came out as well but
really? Women have been influenced with their own sexual promiscuity based on this TV show? I think they could have given women a little more credit than being a fan of a TV show as the reason why women are more confident and willing to admit to wanting a casual encounter. I just thought it was a humorous approach to validating their “data”.
